"On the next corner, East Broadway at Jefferson Street, the EDUCATIONAL ALLIANCE, a non-sectarian social settlement maintained by Jewish societies, organizes educational and recreational activities for the neighborhood" (NYC Guide, p. 115).

In 1889, the Educational Alliance was established as a five-story, sturdy brick settlement house at 197 East Broadway to support the immigration influx of Eastern European Jews to New York City's Lower East Side (Berrol, pp. 401-402; Wikipedia, 2026). The building is recognizable by its large rectangular windows, decorative stone detailing, and prominence in size along East Broadway. Funded by Jewish philanthropists with an initial investment of $125,000, the Educational Alliance was built and organized, educating immigrants and assisting with adaptation to American citizen life through educational and social programs (Sampson, 2012; Berrol, pp. 401-402). Beyond just educational programs, the Educational Alliance promoted health and wellness, providing activities, summer camps, hygiene education, and a safe space for immigrant communities to develop social connections (Sampson, 2012). As community needs changed, the Educational Alliance expanded from its original mission by including senior citizens' living centers, disability programs, and expanding to branches on Manhattan's West Side (Berrol, pp. 401-402). Today, the building remains the home for the Educational Alliance and, following 2013 renovations, became a host for the Manny Cantor Center, offering a preschool, Head Start program, arts, recreational services, along with elder and teen services.

Analysis of 1940 Tax Department Photograph Educational Alliance An analysis of the 1940 New York City Tax Department photograph of the Educational Alliance building, at 197 East Broadway in the Lower East Side. Occupying the corner lot and is the largest building on the block. The building is five stories tall, constructed of brick with symmetrical features. The ground floor features large arched windows. The upper and mid floors contain rows of rectangular, 1 over 4 configuration windows, and the top floor has smaller arched windows. Decorative stone embellishments sit between windows and on the window heads, and a prominent cornice at the roofline adds depth and detail to the exterior and the building's height. Dual-metal fire escapes are attached to the side of the building, indicating a commonly implemented fire safety feature during the early twentieth century. The building's perimeter is surrounded by wrought iron fencing. The photograph shows automobiles and pedestrians strolling, showing everyday life of the Lower East Side in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The building's size, dominance of block space, and decor indicate the importance of the settlement house and the large number of people it served. Unlike typical buildings, the Educational Alliance needed large spaces for classrooms, recreation, and community programs. Along East Broadway on Block 285 stands the Education Alliance, occupying a large corner of the block between Jefferson Street and Clinton Street. The surrounding buildings appear in two shades of pink, indicating a mixture of stone-and-brick residential and store buildings on the block. Immediately west of block 285 are the School for Crippled Children, the Jewish Daily Forward, and several synagogue organizational buildings, illustrating the neighborhood's dense mix of educational, religious, residential, and commercial institutions.
